To many people there are few things more embarrassing than talking about bathroom difficulties.

This is especially true if the people you must talk to are your elderly parents – and the bathroom difficulties are theirs. Children, even adult children, often still have a stigma when it comes to anything to do with the bathroom. They have not forgotten about potty training and other issues that their parents dealt with and that they may feel uncomfortable about as they get older.

Fortunately there are ways you can handle this problem with tact, and one of the best choices is to make sure aging parents are educated about options for toilet aids. Keeping the subject taboo will not help anyone adjust to the changes that aging can bring. When elderly parents have trouble with mobility and cannot get to the bathroom or use the toilet well they also risk falling, this could lead to something much more serious and dangerous than a simple clean-up in the bathroom.

As people age their bodies change and some of the functionality that they enjoyed in their youth leaves them. They may begin to have wetting accidents. They may also have trouble simply getting to the bathroom and using the toilet due to mobility issues.

There are devices that can help them, but only if they know these bath aids for elderly are out there and are educated on how to use them. This is often where an adult child or a hired caregiver comes in. When you care for an elderly person, subjects that you would otherwise avoid often have to be discussed to help keep that person safe and provide them with as much functionality as possible.

One of the easiest ways to help an aging parent is to make sure that parent is educated about and has access to devices like bathroom grab bars that can be placed on the sides of the toilet to help them get up and down and raised or adjustable toilet seats so that they do not have to lower themselves so far. These higher seats also contribute to making it easier for them to get up when they are finished with their business. There are a lot of different styles of these products which makes it easier to choose one that meets a person’s needs.

Some elderly people need more help lowering themselves, while others need more help in standing afterward. The bars that can be placed on the sides of the toilet are designed to help with both of these issues, but more commonly with lowering.

They can use the bars as leverage to stop themselves from falling onto the toilet seat and bruising the backs of their legs. When they need to get up they can use the bars to help themselves stand, but some elderly people do not have enough strength in their arms to use these effectively.

If this is the case, the raised or adjustable toilet seats would be better suited as a toilet aid for them because they will not need to work as hard to stand up. The adjustable version is often a popular choice since it can be raised and lowered as a person needs. If an elderly parent is recovering from something, for example, he or she might only need a certain height-level toilet seat for a specific period of time, after which mobility would be improved.

Being able to adjust a toilet seat can save you a lot of money and keep you from buying different seats at different heights in the future. This makes it easier on the patient and easier on the wallet, as well.

As your parents get older and begin to need help with various things, remember: talking to an aging relative – especially a parent – about concerns like bathroom mobility problems can sometimes be difficult, but it is one of the issues that a person often has to deal with as his or her parents get older. There is no reason to be embarrassed, and there is no reason for the elderly parent to be ashamed.

Aging, and needing help because of it, is a part of life for all of us. It is important not to treat a parent any differently because of bathroom mobility issues, and just to be matter-of-fact when concerns arise. Once they see that they can talk to you without fear of reprisal or laughter, parents will generally be much more willing to get the assistance that they need for the difficulties that old age brings to them.
